Photo - New Zealand by Marie-Claire Holmes
Personally, I'd rather be in these snow-covered mountains in New Zealand than sweltering in the canicule affecting Paris, much of Western Europe and the United States. The French government's advice, as people literally are dying from the worst heatwave since August 2003? Spend as much time as possible in air-conditioned grocery stores and movie theatres. No suggestions as to how we get any sleep! How are you coping with the relentless heat?

With this heat out there in NY, this scenery is looking really good

Oh ... and then I scroll down to a photo of home.
Oh oh oh ... so sad now.

I made my husband promise to get a/c when we married and he did-thank God. I feel a little guilty but, man, does it feel great.

Yes.....several cold showers a day....drinking cold water all day (small quantities at a time) and a fan perpetuously directed to me!
But here in La Rochelle is not so bad.....if you are outside! is cooler than inside a house...because the sea breeze

I have cool shower, go to bed completely wet, hair and all. I wear a long wet t-shirt which is completely dry when I awake! It’s the only thing that works for me!

I tried something on the suggestion of a friend in North Carolina: dampen a sheet or dishcloth or some thin fabric and spread it over you in bed (or on the back of your neck if you're sitting at your desk working), and blow the fan on it; it's like a little air-conditioning system, and you can re-wet the towel as needs be. It really works! It saved me on our worst night yet -- god, what miserable heat!

do you know where in nz this was taken? It looks like in the south island maybe the southern alps. Looks delicious though with all that snow, btw I came here through Alison's blog - hope you don't mind me commenting :-)

Air-conditioning and ceiling fans! But then all our summers are hot and steamy so air-conditioning and ceiling fans are not a luxury but a necessity.

Hi Tara,
Our dog won't go out and we try to stay home also. Last week my 89 year old mom was without air in a mobile home and I called many to help her and one company came to help only after my tearful cries (I.. did cry on the phone as I asked them to help). We have had over 50 people die from heat this week in CA..I'm sure my mom would have been with them had I not made such a fuss. hugs

Marie Antoinette: 'Can't they eat ice cubes?'
It's been just as hot here in dear old blighty, though the thunder storms finally rolled in today to offer some relief. We'll send them your way.

I feel for you not having a/c. I don't know how you sleep. I drink lots of water during the day and keep the fan on my face in the car (turn ac off). Even hot air is better than none!

We keep the AC on all the time and we've got the electricity bill to prove it! I hope you are finding a way to stay cool. These crazy weather patterns scare me.

I usually have no problem with heat. Untill this summer, that is! It is hard to breathe, sleep and anything really and I do consider myself lucky for coping most of the time, way better than others. Wish to see the seaside soon, the beach still is the best way to fight extreme heat!

I love it!

What a relief to dive into this picture. We are headed to the Colorado mountains at the end of this week, where it is hovering near 80 during the day. SO looking forward to the respite - and will of course indulge in some great repast. This heat takes away the appetite - for food and the outdoors!

It's funny how that photo actually made me feel cooler. I moved my mattress into the living room, the only place I have AC!

It will be 106 here today, the 11th day in a row of triple digit temperatures. I stay inside at work, go from building to a/c in car fast, miss outdoor events like the shakespeare festival last week. There are cooling locations set up around towns at community centers and Salvation Army, etc. There have been at least 13 death attributed to heat in my county. God knows how many heat related illnesses. My sister-in-law was treated in emergency for heat exhaustion but not admitted. It's awful here and everywhere. Global warming? The earthly bobble from the earthquake/tsumni? Greenhouse effect? Loss of rainforests? I'm very fearful of an artificial change in the normal cycle of our planet.

Six people died in Sacramento yesterday, because of the heat. Poor people. I thank the Lord we have air-conditioning, even if it isn't working as well as it should. At least it keeps the house at a livable temp!
Those mountains are so so beautiful! I want to go there someday, for sure. Every time I see a pic of that country, it is just amazing.

Aaaahhh. Thank you. I'm so tired of being hot. We've finally gotten the house cool this morning, windows open and fans going since 5:30 a.m. I'll send snow-covered thoughts to you today.

when the winter comes
this heat will be forgotten
and we'll pray for warmth
(haikus are quite addictive. i mean, you start writing any old comment and - wait! - if i arrange these words like this, and put those over here - voila! )
