Peace now - This digital photo of a 35mm photo isn't the best quality. But the message of the "Peace Plaza" installation on the Champ de Mars near the Eiffel Tower is universal. Each pole features artistic interpretations repeating the word "peace" in French, English, Spanish, Arabic, Hebrew, Mandarin, Hindu and many other languages.

How cool! Thanks for sharing this special event :)

Wonderful. Not just the idea but the message of pro-peace and unity especially with the Eiffel Tower being rumoured to be one of the targets for terrorism.
I hope I'll make to see it with my own eyes. Wished it was made a permanent fixture.

Very cool. Wish there was something like that here in the States.

I wish it were a travelling exhibition. We need to spread peace around the planet any way we can.
Thank you, Tara, for sharing the message.

What wonderful symbolism...repeating peace over and over again.

That is one of the things I love about France, is how they put aside money for the arts, how they encourage new construction to add modern art to their project but setting aside money for its use.
This is yet another example of that, art that is given the time, money and attention it deserves to celebrate life's messages to us.
Thanks for showing us Tara the beauty of France and the peace it encourages!

What a beautiful sentiment, I wish it could be hear world wide! It makes me so sad the state we are in.

Haiku:
Peace in any tongue
wanted all around the world
Why can't we have it?

oh, what a shame it wasn't permanent. Maybe we - people with a blog - could put a permanent peace 'thing' in our sidebar -
thanks for visiting my blog again, Tara. I love it when friends visit x0x0

Somehow, the lively and varied responses to this post cheer me. We take cheer when we can these days, don't we? I wish we could reprogram the brains of people in power so that the concept of peace would be the default operating principle.

beautiful. i love this idea. and wish it could be something that could be moved from country to country...so that people could continue to take it in.

Peace is a prayer worth repeating. I had no idea that was there. Thanks for the education.

It's a shame it isn't a permanent exhibition, at least somewhere. It's a nice, touching idea.

How unique! I am sorry it wasn't permanent though! This world needs all the help it can get! Thank you for sharing! Do you have any pics of Paris scenes in your archives?

I wish I had the kind of money it would take to get a similar work comissioned in the U.S. Wouldn't it be great if something like this went up in Central Park?

so striking - and moving -
i may be in paris in the
fall - is it permanent
installation?
Posted by: Sophie | 06 August 2006 at 17:08
Ascender, the installation was temporary and has been removed. The poles were supposed to represent different geographical "poles" of the world, as well as countries joining together in a collaborative effort to find peace.

Interesting image... though I don't know what the poles represent - is there a url for more info? (please don't smack me with one of the poles as suggested though!)

Yes, that is lovely. Although, for some people to get the message, we'd have to smack them in the head with those poles.
