This poster advertises the bullfight Thursday night at Plaza de la Toros de la Maestranza in Sevilla´s El Arenal district. It is the last corrida or bullfight of the 2006 season, with tickets going for as much as 112 euros or as little as 6.50 euros. I have a balcony seat, as I´m curious to see a bullfight. After years of watching bullfights on television and in movies, it should be a fascinating experience. As Spain celebrates Cristobal Colon´s (as the Spanish call Christopher Columbus) birthday Thursday, special activities are planned.

What hit me with your post today is the fact that the US also celebrates Christopher Columbus yet here it was on Friday. It is a banking and post office holiday. I find this to be such an interesting connection. The kids are now made to go to school some stayed home thinking his birthday was a holiday for them also.

Like you, I was curious. However, upon witnessing this event, I found myself wishing death to the matador and a pox upon his house. Worse, I found it difficult to shake the disgust at my own participation.
The bullfight brings a grisly, undignified end to a beautiful, stoic animal who for its short time in the ring, is angry, confused and ultimately subjugated by often ill-flung spears.
But for this, I adore Spain. Thankfully, there are many Spaniards who abhor this practice: alas, not enough to ban it however.
By all means, attend if you must but if you enjoy it, I question your humanity.

While I find traditional bullfights a bit disturbing in their nature, it would be interesting to see one. Speaking of Cristobal Colon, there is a museum in Dominican Republic that I have visited called the el faro de Colon that was interesting in its display of many different countries items of note. They also claim to house the remains of Colon although from I have read they are one of three countries to make that claim. Cheers.

All of these posts are so fun to see and read. I come and read everyday, and it makes me want to go to Spain someday. When will I fit that in?!

As 'important' as the lecture is that I'm going to attend tonight...I'm going to be secretly wishing that I could be at this bullfight. Will look forward to hearing your impressions afterward. (Did you ever see "The Matador"? Appropros of nothing except the bullfight...we just enjoyed it.)

...the idea of a bullfight excite me because of the fury of the bull, they way its big muscular body moves, like an aggressive dance for life...mix this with the glorious decorated dancer with the graceful swirl of the red cape. Spectacular!
Though, in France the bull does not die...which makes it a bit easier to bear the reality of a bullfight...Though in both cases the bull doesn't stand a chance, and that unfairity in this cruel sport just doesn't seem right.

As an avid Hemingway fan, I would definitely see the bullfight, if for no other reason than some literary bonding! Can't wait to hear about it. xo, Deborah

I'll be curious to hear your observations of the bullfight. They really go to the bitter end don't they?

Hi Tara, Manny ended up having cancer after all so I'm behind. He's stable right now :) I have been to a bullfight, I cried and had to leave but I was ten :)

Tara,
What a special woman you are. Everyday I wonder, "what special photos will Tara have for us today?" And you always come through with interesting and beautiful picture stories.
I was curious whether you'd see a corrida or bullfight while you were there. Voila!
Enjoy.

I've never seen a Spanish bullfight. I'm afraid the blood would get to me. I have seen a bull fight here in France where the bull doesn't die. The men in the ring try to remove a ribbon from his horns, leaping around trying to avoid the horns and running like crazy as the bull comes after them. It's alot of fun.
