All roads lead from Paris...at least that's what the mapmakers envisioned when they set Point Zero for France in front of Notre Dame.

The view from the West: Notre Dame's main doors, central rose window and openwork gallery are visible, along with the long lines of people waiting to see the cathedral's interiors.

Chimieres, or gargoyles jut over the side of the building.

Exterior views of the cathedral's right side.

Exquisite carved details over an arched side door.

I've never heard of point zero. That was a "little" detail the tour guide left out way back when. Beautiful pictures, Tara. I love all the dramatic angles.

I've never heard of Point Zero before. How very interesting it would of been to live in a society so sure of itself that it made one spot the center of all maps! There are no "Point Zeros" today that I know of.

I foolishly went to Notre Dame one Christmas Eve thinking I would get into the service. Even though I am no at all religious, I was so moved by the singing (on the outside) and that fabulous building.

Even though I'm not a religious person, old churches and cathedrals fascinate me. Thanks for these pictures.

Incredible simply incredible. The beauty of Notre Dame is breathtaking. Your photos are exactly what I needed on a day when I am completely uninspired to create anything. Thank you my friend!

I don't remember Notre Dame being so gorgeous-of course I was a teenager and more interested in shopping at Galleries Lafayette at the time.
