At the recent brocante at Chatou, I couldn't resist this Napoleon III wire postcard rack. I am mad about sculptural objects made of wire. While the original finial is missing, this one will do until I find a proper replacement. There's only one problem: there's not room in the apartment for the postcard rack - something else will have to go!
At present, the revolving rack is filled with readers' delightful postcards from the Postcard Project. Thank you! At Christmas, I will fill it with holiday cards tied with ribbon. In the new year, photos of family and friends will replace the cards. It could also be stuffed with flowers or vintage Barbie clothes on tiny hangers. Perhaps it would make an interesting art piece, if filled with advertising memorabilia or blocks of typeface letters. Or for a gardener, vintage packets of seeds; for a chef, recipes. Maybe vintage children's flash cards? Or language flash cards (if I actually had such a thing), to help improve my Spanish? Do you have any more ideas for the postcard rack?

What an awesome find! (another one from me is on its way shortly to add to your collection. My little adventure to the coast made me think of you!)

What a great decoration. I love seeing old things put to new uses - and this rack has such potential.

I guess it would be a nice way to keep track of friends and family: hang a card from where they are near one of their recent photos. It would be a way to remember visiting their part of the world/country is worth it for two reasons. I guess it would make the effort of seeing them all more often less of a burden.

Beautiful. I would use it for postcards too.
Not that I would have the display space for it (I have a little postcard gallery on the walls on my guest bathroom *g*).

fantastic!

Tara,
I guess you could use it to store all the vetoed health bills from George Bush. Nah, that would be a waste.
Maybe photos of all the children who don't qualify for health coverage now?
Seriously, it is so unique and interesting, I think you have found the perfect use for it, postcards! Maybe from all your blogging friends around the world. You always find the most interesting things...you definately have an eye for this.

Hey.....I see my card on there!!!! I suppose it is not sturdy enough for a magazine rack...or a shoe rack:( I would fill mine with vintage black and white postcard of France and Italy...or maybe display your old french documents in there instead of the postcards :) Have fun with it!!

What a great display, I am thoroughly enjoying your blog, and the pictures of a place so far away. It's like going on a vacation to read. I need your help. I'm looking for these knobs, and I thought you might know where I could get them.

They say Paris France, 6th Arrondissement Commode Vetenent, as best I can tell under the magnifying glass. Any ideas??

Ha! there's my card to you. It's interesting to think of it, it's posting generated from the Internet. An actual piece of mail being sent abroad and then seeing it!
Something about button cards seems right to me . . .

I have just been reading the article in The Guardian that Antipo pointed you to. I AM ASHAMED TO BE ENGLISH.

At moo.com you can now make your own postcards you get 20 for £9.99 (they emailed me today) and each one can be a different photo. My mini cards were done by them - you have a set. You could put a collection of your own favourite pictures you have put on this blog, turned into postcards, in the wire rack. I feel so proud I was actually there at the time you purchased this item.

Cookies! Festoon it with cookies wrapped in cellophane and tied with ribbon for special occasions. If you choose thin cookies, like palmiers, they could fit in the spaces....

I've never thought about a postcard rack, but I think you've got it covered. However there is the spring flower bacchnial, the patriotic and dog days and fall with it's wild colors! Have at it P.P.

be still my heart. i've got such nice postcards from swaps i've participated in this past year and no idea what to do with them. you've found the perfect answer and of course i want to scroll across the photograph to see the table and what treasures it holds. and what's stacked neatly against the wall underneath the green table...
i love your treasures. xo

What a great find! I love the idea of having a spot in the middle of my home where all sorts of cards from friends over the years can be displayed -- I think if I had it, I'd be substituting a few in and out all the time, but I'd be able to have reminders of my life history -- congratulations cards from various achievements, birthday cards with written sentiments I especially value, thank you's from former students, Mother's Day cards from my children when young, along with postcards from travelling friends. So much better than having them all tucked in a box where I seldom enjoy them. Your home must be a lively, lovely, warm space.

You scored!! It looks just great with your cards in it.
I'm MAD about wire too!!! Especially when it's old and imperfect.
Posted by: rochambeau | 18 October 2007 at 14:35
I like it with the various postcards in it. I guess I'm a traditionalist.
Posted by: Ally | 18 October 2007 at 14:34
I was just wondering where it was going to go! You need a couple of houses, dear Tara!
You could give yourself the project of making sketches daily (or weekly) and gradually fill it with your own work!
Posted by: laura | 18 October 2007 at 14:33
It looks absolutely fantastic, Tara - I'm sure it could be used to display so many things - from Valentines to recipe cards! What a lucky find - it's a beautiful piece of sculpture all on it's own.~xox

Tara, it looks so beautiful filled with cards that in turn are filled with loving words for a dear friend (take a bow because that would be YOU) and I have no ideas to offer, just praise!! Vida x x x
