Nostalgia at Selfridges, London.Hard to believe that after
all these years, Aunt Jemima Syrup still has that same label!
Also funny to think that Lucky Charms cereal and Jif
Peanut Butter are considered “gourmet” foods worth
a special display at a big department store! Do you have any similar items in your kitchen cupboards? What are the foods from childhood that you still eat on occasion?

Loved all the comments about JIF. That stuff is addicting! Couldn’t be all that sugar! My friend who used to kid me about eating it said, it’s candy peanut butter. So what? Anyway, I have switched to Smart Balance PB, less bad fat and it tastes good. Log Cabin syrup, Kit-kats were among the staples at our house.

Jif IS the best! (And I have it in my cupboard.) As for childhood faves still on the menu, oatmeal is a big one, along with grilled cheese sandwiches (best with tomato soup). And, come summer and cook-out time, hot dogs and s'mores. They always make me feel like a kid!

I wish I could find some Cheerios in Paris. I miss that for breakfast.

Ha--I remember living in England and buying things like pretzels and peanut butter at the gourmet store. One of the things that really reminds me of being a kid--and is a "comfort food" when I'm sick--are saltines with butter. My grandmother ate them for breakfast.

My childhood foods I still LOVE are Cracker Jacks, Cherry pop, and pretzel stix!!! Don't forget the famous chocolate Hershey's Bar with Almonds!!! mmmMMMMMMM! You're making me hungry!!!tee hee

The food from my childhood that I still eat is yogurt. Plain yogurt that is! Unfortunately nowadays it has to be low-fat. As for peanut butter, I've switched to organic. And I've never had cereal for breakfast, but I do enjoy a handful of granola.
Odd to see these things in the photo as "special foods" though. xoxo

Recently I had a bowl of Frosted Flakes for the first time in decades. It brought back my childhood in a rush.
Other time-machine foods are A&W rootbeer in a frosted mug (remember the chips of ice on the outside?), Ruffles potato chips with California Dip (Lipton's onion soup mixed with sour cream), and those little round candies that came stuck to strips of paper that we used to eat at Little League games.

Actually, the Aunt Jemima label has changed drastically. She is now much thinner and as lost the bandana on her head. If I get on my flight Thursday, I'll be packing Smuckers organic peanut butter and Duke's mayo.

This is one of my favorite sections of the market!

Only Jif enters this house! It's only been the last twenty years that we've had it here in Canada, so I used to pop across the line to the States for that, and Rice Chex, which we still don't have in here! I use that brand of syrup too! Loved alphabets and captain crunch which have been replace by raisin bran.
Fun post!
Hugs Sherrie

Cocoa Pops which I would gather no one in the States has heard of. Just to say Jif Peanut Butter is THE best. We have only just started to get it in our supermarkets in the UK. A few years back a sink scourer here was called Jif but when your Peanut Butter arrived they changed it to Cif :)

My favorite midnight snack is Jif superchunky peanut butter. One spoonful and I can go right back to sleep with sweet dreams.

I just ate some Jif peanut butter! We've been away for two weeks, and I have nothing in my cupboards.
My other childhood favorite is chocolate Ovaltine in warm milk, with cinnamon toast and Quaker oatmeal. Yum :)

Nilla Vanilla wafers and Cheerios remind me of childhood. An item I have not seen for years are the "space sticks" -- peanut butter or chocolate flavored -- which my sisters and I liked in the early 1970s.

How funny that our old-time supermarket staples should be considered gourmet fare!
No Lucky Charms here, but the occasional bottle of Aunt Jemima's syrup makes it way into the cupboard, if there will be pancakes on the menu for little weekend visitors - oh, and a jar of peanut butter, too. I still remember, "choosy mothers choose Jif" :-)

Hmmmm....let's see....
The first thing that comes to mind is Breyers Vanilla ice cream. I would walk to the corner drug store and they would place a big scoop in a cone for me....lot's of REAL vanilla beans. Those were the days when you could only choose from 3 flavors. Vanilla, chocolate and strawberry. Ha! Now it takes hours to pick out a flavor......I still go for the vanilla. How about Bosco?
BTW.....it's my daughter-in-law that is named Jordana. Still a beautiful name!!!
Happy New Year!!!

Instant oatmeal. Yep.

Peanut Butter Captain Crunch cereal is my top choice for childhood indulgence. Pizza and ice cream always remind me of children's birthday parties.

Funny how I haven't held onto any of the childhood favs, save peanut butter. I think peanut butter is burned into my soul :) xx, JP/deb

Hilarious! We have all of those foods in our cupboards right now. Mainly due to the fact that JIF is the only peanut butter I will eat! It doesn't taste waxy or sugary, it actually tastes like peanuts!
The rest is in there for the kids...at least that is what I tell myself.
Much love to you on this rainy day in Southern Ontario!

Childhood brands that would be in my cupboard now??? Oh gosh, nothing on a regular basis. Now and then a box of Kellogg's Raisin Bran or perhaps a can of Campbell's Cream of Celery soup!!
I hated Lucky Charms!!! Blah!!!

How Funny!
Yes, peanut butter is still on "le menu" Jiff/creamy (glad to know some consider it gourmet) right up there with the Lucky Charms hah. Wonder what this reveals about my personality?
Foods I still love, with a blast from the past: French onion soup, Swedish meatballs, Quiche Lorraine, Devils food cake with butter cream icing, Chicken Divan, Chocolate chip cookies, gingerbread, meatloaf. I could go on. When i get together with my mom we usually make something I remember fondly from childhood. During the holidays we made Chicken Tetrazzini. It was as sublime as the memory.
Hope you have a delicious evening!

Childhood foods...hmmm, when I was sick my mother always made a poached egg and served it over toast, all chopped in a bowl. "Egg in a bowl" always made me feel better. I used to eat Cookie Crisp cereal, Pop Tarts, and other sugary cereal stuff. I still like that stuff.

make me smile... my husband's choise of gourme food... :-))))

No brands, I don't think, but grilled cheese sandwiches! And, oddly enough, in the weeks right after September 11 (don't start calling me Rudi ;D), I ate Campbell's tomato soup and grilled cheeses for lunch more days than not.

Kraft Mac and Cheese, Peanut Butter Captain Crunch and Rice-a-Roni :)
Posted by: My Melange | 06 January 2008 at 19:34
Kozy Shack rice pudding-always gravitate towards it when I don't feel well. Iced raisin cookies are another favorite. Canned fruit cocktail with cherries in it.

I would have never thought Lucky Charms a gourmet food. Go figure. I'm going to have to think about those childhood foods and get back to you. Lots of comfort foods, but usually it was something my Mom would make.
