So there I was in Amsterdam with only a telephoto lens and a macro, having forgotten a basic workhorse lens. I had no choice but to surreptiously shoot photos of people some distance away. I must admit I felt a bit like a thief, sneaking these photos. I was seated at an outdoor cafe when I shot images of this guy in a boat.
And I got caught out when snapping this couple. Luckily, the guy had a sense of humour. In the photo below, you see the expression on his face when he notices me. When I saw him looking at me, I jerked the camera away and waved at him and laughed. So the image is slightly out of focus, but you get the picture - I felt like a naughty child caught doing something wrong.
This guy was paying no attention, so I shot a few images of him and his dog.
En route from Amsterdam to Paris, I trained the telephoto lens on this stranger sleeping. Yes, I know, the nerve!!! Normally I ask permission to take people's photos. In France, it's illegal to photograph people without their consent.
Check back later for more photos of Amsterdam's myriad charms. And see other photos here.

I'm like you - I generally ask people's permission before I take their photo unless you won't be able to see their face or recognise them in a big crowd. But I think all rules have their exceptions and there is something very healthy about breaking your own rules from time to time. Good for you.

And they are all men :)
I didn't know it was illegal to photograph people without permission in France. No wonder they go ape shit when you do it. ;)
