Butterflies are free, Amsterdam.
A bit of frivolity today, as I need a break from all the bad news. In London this week, my friend Lee and I visited the Tate Modern, including an exhibit of Robert Frank photographs from his series The Americans. We also saw them hanging the exhibition Exposed: Voyeurism, Surveillance and the Camera that opens Friday. The exhibit addresses some interesting issues, including photographers' rights and voyeurism, both public and private.
Speaking of privacy issues, could it be that Facebook is actually listening to our concerns? And here is an unusual form of hacking - a camera!
On Thursday I had an appointment with the dermatologist, who prescribed a remedy for a sudden outbreak of "boutons rouges." Doesn't sound so bad to refer to angry little blemishes as "red buttons," does it?
It's been raining in Paris, disrupting the French Open match schedule at Roland Garros. Earlier this week, the French were aghast at Venus Williams' s choice of tennis outfit, which appeared more fitting for the Folies Bergere than Center Court.
Meanwhile, public transport has been erratic, due to multiple strikes and protests. (Just another day in Paris, then).
Louis Vuitton has opened a new maison (as opposed to a store) in London. And Sarah Burton, the late Alexander McQueen's long-time assistant, has been named his successor at Gucci.
Amsterdam: Made by Hand
My lovely friend Pia is preparing to launch her new book Amsterdam: Made by Hand. If you're in Amsterdam on Saturday, June 5th, be sure and stop by the American Book Center in Spui Square at 3 p.m., where Pia will be signing copies!

Great way to find your bicycle amongst the thousands!

Your post is a break from bad news -- more failure in the gulf oil spill being at the top of my list. Bad to worse. Which makes me wonder (your boutons rouges) if Baton Rouge is a derivative of "red buttons"?

Hope your little red buttons clear up soon...
I think I will add some butterflies to my ride.

So much to share and I love it all. Venus Williams' tennis outfit is too funny. She will look back some day and wonder what ever she was thinking to wear it. In my last job I got to develop a tee shirt for her sister, Serena. What fun it was, but oh my what a shape to work with. I saved the pattern for a long time because it was so unique and fun.

PS boutons rouges! so much more chic, I'll have to remember that. I hope it goes away soon though!

Oh! I was thoroughly enjoying reading your news and tidbits, and then there I was! Thank you very much for mentioning the book launch to your lovely readers. I just got back from the art supply shop, on the look out for materials for the window display. My heart was doing backflips and scissor kicks looking at all the pretty papers to choose from - is there anything better than an art supply store? I think not.
Have a great weekend, and thanks again - come one, come all to the launch, it's gonna be lots of fun!! px

Wasn't the Robert Frank exhibit wonderful? I saw it in NYC and got two books from it. And Pia's website and book - beautiful!!

That is a wonderful photo!
Boutons rouges...sounds MUCH better than a rash or hives or pimples...
Indeed...that was quite a tennis (un)dress that Ms. Venus wore on the court.
Happy weekend, Tara!
