Swans and their cygnets in our canal. Click photos to view detail.
At dinner Monday evening, David and I were discussing when the recently-hatched cygnets would be leaving their nest (around the bend on the same canal's bank). On Tuesday morning, David shouted for me to look out the window et voila! The swan family - both parents and their five cygnets - had arrived.
I grabbed my camera (85 mm lens; not ideal for this scene) and raced down the stairs before they swam away. It was the very first outing for the cygnets.
Although curious to explore their surroundings, the cygnets didn't venture far from their mama.
The mother swan watched intently, as the cygnets nibbled on reeds. The papa swan kept Mallards and coots at a safe distance.
Hopefully for their next visit, I'll be prepared with a longer lens.
