The new book Quiet Paris by Siobhan Wall offers a welcome glimpse into more than 120 of the city's hidden gems - perfect for exploring, especially in August, when the city really becomes "quiet Paris." This month, many Paris residents have ditched their city apartments for their annual seaside or country holiday escapes. Consequently, the city takes on a more relaxed atmosphere - ideal for visiting lovely gardens or jewel-like museums and historic churches. And of course, there's ample time for relaxed shopping in bijoux boutiques, as well as dining in charming bistros and cafes serving memorable cuisine made from fresh local ingredients.
Among my favourite haunts mentioned in the book are the Jeu de Paume (Centre Nationale de Photographie); Librairie Galignani (an intriguing array of books in both French and English); the UNESCO Garden of Peace (designed by sculptor Isamu Noguchi); the Musee Carnavalet (bursting with art and important mementoes of the history of La Republique) and Parc Monceau (a key scene from the French thriller Tell No One was filmed in this elegant park).
Quiet Paris is small enough to tote in a handbag or backpack for handy reference or inspiration. The book highlights some of the city's unique art galleries, bookshops and cultural centres, indexed via arrondisement. Quiet Paris also offers suggestions on comfortable places to stay during your next visit. With this book for reference, you can find and enjoy your own quiet corners of the city, no matter the hectic pace of Parisienne life!
Quiet Paris is published by Frances Lincoln Ltd. and is available at many booksellers or online. In addition to Quiet Paris, Siobhan Wall is the author of Quiet Amsterdam and Quiet London.
I think I may need to add all three of these to my collection. I can't seem to resist collecting travel books -- even if I think I'll never get out of town again! These look just like my kind of thing.

I love all three cities, but it's always nice to find an oasis of quiet amongst the hustle and bustle - especially in London and Paris.

Thank you for sharing with us, Tara. I think all three titles must be added to my library.

Sounds like a charm of a book. And it's about my favorite place.

Oh I think I would enjoy all three of these books if I come back to Europe. The list of places you enjoy, I have never been to. Thanks for the recommendation. Right now I am reading a book on visiting England and my mind is wanting to go, but not yet.
